The River Clwyd

Sea Trout Fishing on the River Clwyd and River Elwy

The River Clwyd (Afon Clwyd) rises in the Clocaenog Forest to the north west of Corwen, then flowing south before veering north eastwards towards Ruthin, where it enters the Vale of Clwyd. Just south of Denbigh it is joined by the River Clywedog, before meandering northwards to St Asaph. Two miles further on the Clwyd is joined by its major tributary, the River Elwy. Below the confluence, the river enters a narrow tidal estuary, to reach the Irish Sea at Rhyl. The main run of sea trout usually starts entering the river system from June onwards; some large fish enter early in May. The best months for night time fly-fishing are usually July and August.

Sea Trout Fishing on the River Clwyd

A new angling club The Vale of Clwyd Angling Club has been formed by the amalgamation of two former clubs - the Denbigh & Clwyd Angling Club and Bodelwyddan Game Anglers offering anglers access to many miles of sea trout fishing on the River Clwyd.  Apart from a small number of sections, the club has access to either single or double bank fishing for the whole length of the River Clwyd offering excellent opportunities to local and visiting anglers, with a ten year average recorded catch (to 2009) of 879 sea trout per season. The club also has fishing on the rivers Elwy and Wheeler as well as trout fishing on Clywedog Reservoir. There are limited places for full membership and day permits are available at reasonable cost.

The Rhyl & St Asaph Angling Association offers 20 miles of salmon and sea trout fishing on the rivers Clwyd, Elwy and Aled. The club controls 16 beats several of which it owns. Many are reserved for members only and some are bookable by members to ensure there is no overcrowding. Day or weekly tickets for non-club members are available from Foxons Tackle in St Asaph for salmon, trout and sea trout fishing on the rivers Clwyd, Elwy and Aled.
